The Gar-Field Indians were less then stellar in their home opener Friday night.
The Indians committed costly penalties and allowed 16 second half points in a 16-12 loss to visiting North Stafford in former Gar-Field coach Joe Mangano’s return.
After holding North Stafford (1-0) to 42 yards of total offense in the first half, the Indians gave up 159 yards in the second half, including two huge scoring plays.
Leading 7-0 early in the third quarter, the Indians (1-1) allowed North Stafford wide receiver Gerardo Torres to run free down the left sideline. Wolverines quarterback AJ Slye found Torres after rolling to his left for a 64-yard touchdown pass. Slye’s two-point conversion throw to Tyler Portell was successful for an 8-7 lead.
On third and 10 from their own 34 with 6:12 left in the fourth quarter, North Stafford’s Torry Hart took a handoff straight up the middle, made one cut to the left for the go-ahead touchdown. Ryan Husted’s extra-point attempt was blocked to keep the score at 16-10.
Gar-Field got one more chance with 2:30 remaining, but Aaron Jackson overthrew Ke’Shaun Allen and was picked off by North Stafford’s Jared Fayorsey. Fayorsey snagged one more Jackson pass as time expired.
The two interceptions were the only passes Jackson attempted in the fourth quarter. He was sacked on two prior drop backs in the fourth, one resulting in a safety that tied the game at 10 three minutes into the quarter.
Mangano coached the Indians from 2004-2007, totaling an 18-25 overall record and playoff appearances the last two seasons. North Stafford students rushed the field after the game in celebration.
Indians junior running back Bryce Miller finished with 113 yards on 18 carries with one touchdown. Miller scored on a 24-yard touchdown run 1:42 into the third quarter after Husted bobbled an attempted punt and the Wolverines were flagged 15 yards.
